Meta updated its AI scraping terms for business accounts, initially allowing data use across all products but later restricting it to advertising and business products. This change sparked backlash from UK and EU users, who can now object to data usage via Instagram's privacy center. The effective date was delayed from October 30 to November 20 due to objections. Evidence indicates Roblox scrapers have already collected over 100 gigabytes of data, including 60 gigabytes of adult content from SmutBase, raising concerns about automated scraping without user consent.

Key points

Meta's AI scraping terms were updated to restrict data use to 'advertising and business products' rather than all Meta products, with an effective date delayed from October 30 to November 20.

Users in the UK and EU can object to Meta's data usage by clicking 'object' in the privacy center on Instagram, which requires a written explanation of why they are objecting.

Context

Meta's AI scraping terms for business accounts were updated to allow data use across all products, sparking backlash from UK and EU users. The update was initially set for October 30 but delayed to November 20. Users can object via Instagram's privacy center, though the specific impact of this objection on the broader AI training process remains unverified.

Limitations

Evidence is limited to reported scraping incidents and user-facing UI instructions. No data on the volume of data used for AI training, the specific impact of objections on Meta's AI models, or the legal status of the scraping activities beyond reported cases is provided.
