Briefings
In 1927, the United States possessed over 22 million motor vehicles while the Soviet Union had only 18,000, marking a massive productivity revolution. This episode explores Henry Ford's transformation of automobile manufacturing into an industrial system, the adoption of the assembly line, and the transfer of American industrial capabilities to Soviet and German industries during the Second World War. The discussion examines how Fordism elevated industrial production above shareholder returns and shaped global geopolitical outcomes.
Key points
- By 1927, the United States had more than 22 million motor vehicles on its roads compared with just 18,000 in the Soviet Union.
- Henry Ford transformed automobile manufacturing from a skilled craft into an industrial system capable of producing millions of affordable vehicles through the assembly line.
Context
This podcast explores how Henry Ford and his engineers transformed automobile manufacturing from a skilled craft into an industrial system capable of producing millions of affordable vehicles. It examines the technological foundations of the assembly line, the transformation of unskilled labour into an extraordinarily productive industrial workforce, and the distinctive Midwestern culture that gave birth to this revolution.
Limitations
Evidence covers the 1927 US-Soviet vehicle disparity and Ford's early industrialization. It does not include data on specific WWII outcomes, post-war deindustrialization trends, or China's industrial rise. Some claims about Fordism's political influence are presented as historical analysis rather than verified facts.
