Briefings

In September 2026, credit card spending on luxury goods in the US fell for the third consecutive month, with LVMH reporting a 130 million euro drop in stock value. The decline was 6% compared to the same period in 2025, driven by a shift in consumer spending patterns toward AI-driven wealthy demographics in the North America market. While some luxury segments like fashion and leather improved, watches and jewelry saw further declines. The data highlights a divergence between global luxury performance and the specific US market context.

Key points

• Credit card spending on luxury goods in the US fell 6% in September 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.
• LVMH reported a 130 million euro drop in stock value in September 2026, marking the first time the French luxury group reported such a decline.

Context

The September decline occurred during a period of broader market weakness, with the Chinese market experiencing significant drops. Luxury brands anticipated shifting consumer spending toward North America, particularly wealthy AI-driven demographics, to offset losses in Asia. This data is critical for understanding the resilience of the US luxury sector amid global economic headwinds.

Limitations

Data covers only September 2026, with no information on prior months or future projections. Specific regional breakdowns beyond the US are limited, and the impact of the Chinese market decline on other luxury segments remains unquantified.
