Briefings
James Temple's 2026 reporting highlights permafrost as a massive climate blind spot, noting it covers 15% of Northern Hemisphere land but is currently underrepresented in UN models. Key findings include permafrost shrinking 12% since 1850, wildfires potentially releasing 80 billion metric tons of carbon by 2100, and a complex carbon cycle where plant recovery might offset emissions. The article emphasizes the need for updated UN reports to account for these feedback loops.
Key points
- Permafrost covers approximately 15% of land in the Northern Hemisphere, yet current UN climate models largely exclude its gradual loss and abrupt collapse risks.
- Wildfires in boreal forests could release up to 80 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide by the end of the century, accelerating permafrost thaw.
Context
James Temple's 2026 reporting features two in-depth stories on permafrost, including coverage of wildfire efforts and carbon cycle complexities. The article is from The Spark, MIT Technology Review's weekly climate newsletter, published October 22, 2026.
Limitations
Evidence is limited to a single article from The Spark, MIT Technology Review, published October 22, 2026. Uncertainty exists regarding the full scope of permafrost loss, fire impacts, and potential carbon offsetting mechanisms not yet fully quantified.
