Briefings
A research team developed speculative tool execution for on-device voice assistants to reduce latency. By predicting tool requests during speech recognition, they lowered the median time-to-first-audio from 5.79 seconds to 4.60 seconds while decreasing standard deviation from 3.49s to 2.81s. The method uses a Predictor module to cache results and a rule-based validation mechanism to ensure accuracy, with the LLM retaining direct tool call capabilities as a fallback.
Key points
- The study introduces speculative tool execution for on-device cascaded voice agents, which predicts tool requests from partial ASR hypotheses to reduce end-to-end response latency.
- Live measurements from a fully implemented Android voice assistant showed a reduction in median time-to-first-audio from 5.79 seconds to 4.60 seconds.
Context
Tool-augmented speech assistants typically serialize automatic speech recognition, large language model inference, and external tool execution, causing latency only after the user finishes speaking. This research addresses that bottleneck by predicting tool requests during speech recognition.
Limitations
Evaluation was conducted on a single fully implemented Android voice assistant, limiting generalizability. Results represent median and standard deviation metrics rather than worst-case performance guarantees.
