Briefings

In October 2026, AI models like Claude Opus 5.5 demonstrated significant improvements in game design, producing emotionally engaging experiences with minimal guidance. The author built four browser-based games using HTML/JavaScript, achieving novel gameplay loops and satisfying endings through iterative prompting. While GPT-6 Astra showed promise, Opus 5.5 was identified as the leading performer in this specific domain.

Key points

• Claude Opus 5.5 successfully created a top-down fantasy RPG with a full 15-minute story, emotional ending, and experimental level editor after iterative prompting.
• The author built four browser-based games using HTML and JavaScript, achieving novel gameplay loops and satisfying endings through iterative prompting without looking at the code.

Context

Following the November 2025 inflection point where coding agents became daily drivers, October 2026 marked a new shift in AI capabilities for game design. The author attended Foo Camp in Berkeley to discuss these developments, noting that while building games is now easy, creating novel, compelling gameplay loops remains a fine art requiring human-like creativity.

Limitations

The evidence covers only four specific browser-based games built by the author using HTML/JavaScript. The author explicitly states that GPT-6 Astra is not yet as effective as Opus 5.5 in game design, and no exhaustive study of AI-generated games has been conducted.
