Briefings

A study identifies a paradox where successful family businesses often fail when adapting to new economic conditions because past success criteria become rigid barriers. The research defines 'Inércia Protegida' (Protected Inertia) as a protective layer where past practices are defended as essential, even when obsolete. Key findings include the role of 'Guardians of the Pattern'—founders, family members, and managers who resist change to preserve perceived value—and the distinction between 'Guardians of Continuity' (who oppose change) and 'Guardians of Credo' (who defend the content of the pattern). The study highlights that protecting a practice does not equal resisting change; rather, it involves defending the practice's perceived value while acknowledging its potential obsolescence.

Key points

• Inércia Protegida is a protective layer in organizations where past practices are defended as essential, even when obsolete, driven by the desire to preserve perceived value rather than actively resisting change.
• Guardians of the Pattern are individuals (founders, family members, managers) who resist change to protect practices they believe define the organization's success, distinguishing them from Guardians of Continuity who oppose change and Guardians of Credo who defend the content of the pattern.

Context

This research examines family businesses facing economic shifts, identifying how past success criteria create barriers to adaptation. The study explains the mechanism of 'Inércia Protegida' and the roles of different types of Guardians, offering insights into why successful firms struggle to evolve despite past success.

Limitations

The evidence covers only family businesses and focuses on the psychological and social mechanisms of inertia. It does not provide data on specific financial performance metrics, market share changes, or quantitative outcomes beyond qualitative descriptions of decision-making processes.
