Briefings
Midterm elections resulted in a Democratic majority in both the US House and Senate, ending Donald Trump's two-year presidency. While federal energy policy shifts are unlikely due to the lack of a two-thirds supermajority, local control has expanded significantly, with Democrats gaining power in Pennsylvania and Georgia. The data center industry faces a major setback as voters overwhelmingly restricted development, and AI-related candidates performed well. The article notes that while local action is promising, the next two years will determine the extent of federal legislative changes.
Key points
- Democrats secured control of both the US House and Senate, ending Trump's presidency and ending the period of unified government that passed the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.
- Local elections saw Democrats gain control of Pennsylvania and Georgia Public Service Commissions, and voters overwhelmingly restricted data center development in Texas.
Context
The article analyzes the immediate political shift from a unified Republican administration to a divided one, noting that while federal climate laws remain limited, local jurisdictions are actively pursuing renewable energy and grid reforms.
Limitations
Evidence covers only the immediate post-election period and local actions; federal legislative outcomes beyond the next election are unconfirmed. Data center restrictions are based on Ballotpedia tracking as of November 4, 2026, and specific state-level data center laws are not detailed.
