Briefings
Beta Technologies is clearing the runway for electric flight by operating its Alia aircraft on conventional runways using a pusher motor and battery system. The company, founded by Kyle Clark in 2017, has an order backlog of nearly 1,000 aircraft and is developing both a runway-based CX300 and an eVTOL variant, A250. The Alia family has flown over 300,000 kilometers, with the CX300 expected to receive FAA certification in 2027.
Key points
- Beta Technologies operates its Alia aircraft on conventional runways using a pusher motor and battery system, avoiding the need for vertical takeoff and landing.
- The company claims the Alia consumes only about $9 worth of electricity per flight, compared to $210-$255 for a comparable Cessna 208 Caravan.
Context
Beta Technologies is taking a pragmatic stepwise approach for certification and market entry, focusing on short-haul freight and medical transport. The company is developing two variants of its Alia airframe: the runway-based CX300 and the A250, which adds four lift propellers for vertical takeoff and landing. Beta expects FAA certification for the CX300 in 2027 and for the A250 a year later.
Limitations
Evidence covers only the Alia CX300 and A250 aircraft; specific certification dates for the A250 are not confirmed beyond the 2027 estimate. The company's order backlog of nearly 1,000 aircraft is stated, but exact figures may vary. The article does not provide details on the specific number of flights completed or the total distance flown by the Alia family.
