Briefings
Two forecasting institutions predict Portuguese GDP growth above 2% in 2026, with the Fórum para a Competitividade estimating 2.2% to 2.4% and Católica Lisbon Forecasting Lab projecting 2.2%. Both agree on a 3% inflation rate, though Católica notes the current 3.6% quarterly figure is driven by energy price spikes. Employment unemployment remains stable at 5.7% for the full year.
Key points
- The Fórum para a Competitividade estimates Portuguese GDP growth between 2.2% and 2.4% in the third quarter of 2026, driven by a robust first half exceeding 2.5%.
- Católica Lisbon Forecasting Lab predicts a 2.2% GDP growth and 3% inflation for 2026, citing elevated energy price transmission as the primary driver for the current 3.6% quarterly inflation rate.
Context
Portuguese economic forecasts for 2026 are generally positive, with both institutions projecting growth above the 2% threshold. The Fórum attributes this to a strong first half, while Católica highlights energy price shocks as the main inflation driver. Both agree on a 3% inflation rate for the year.
Limitations
Forecast accuracy is limited by the reliance on historical data and economic models; the 2026 projections are forward-looking estimates based on current trends rather than confirmed outcomes. Specific details on the 2027 budget and the exact impact of the 19% IRC reduction remain unverified in the provided text.
