Briefings
Oklo co-founder Caroline DeWitte secured a Series A venture capital round in 2018 to launch Oklo, a startup that designs, builds, and operates nuclear power plants. The company raised over three to four billion dollars via a SPAC to fund its operations, including fuel fabrication and isotope facilities. DeWitte successfully built a test reactor in 220 days under the Department of Energy's regulatory framework during the pandemic. The company operates independently of traditional utilities, targeting data centers and hyperscalers for reliable electricity without facility management burdens.
Key points
- Oklo secured its first venture capital-led Series A round in 2018, raising over three to four billion dollars via a SPAC to fund nuclear hardware operations.
- The company successfully built a test reactor in 220 days under the Department of Energy's regulatory framework during the pandemic.
Context
Caroline DeWitte founded Oklo to challenge the traditional model of selling nuclear reactors to utilities, instead designing, building, and operating them directly. This approach appeals to hyperscalers and data centers seeking reliable electrons without facility management burdens. The company's success includes raising billions through a SPAC and operating independently of traditional utilities.
Limitations
Evidence covers only the founding, Series A funding, and test reactor development. Specific operational metrics, long-term commercial performance data, or regulatory outcomes beyond the pandemic period are not provided.
