Briefings
General Motors agreed to pay $220 million to settle allegations that it illegally sold drivers' private behavior and location data to brokers and insurers. The settlement resolved claims by attorneys general from 35 US states and the District of Columbia regarding the Smart Driver program, which enrolled millions of drivers between 2016 and 2024. The program was accused of violating privacy promises while offering a safety service, and many enrolled drivers were also on OnStar. This is a confirmed settlement based on Reuters reporting, not an allegation.
