Briefings
Governor Hochul announced a state-commissioned study ranking New York second nationally in quantum businesses, research groups, and patents. The study identifies greater coordination as a key opportunity to accelerate commercialization, noting New York has committed $360 million to quantum development, including $300 million for a Stony Brook hub and $60 million for up to four regional commercialization hubs. The study estimates these investments could support $2.3 billion to $5 billion in economic activity and 7,200 to 10,100 job-years through 2036. The findings will inform NYSTAR's strategy as the state prepares to establish Regional Quantum Technology Commercialization Hubs.
Key points
- New York ranks second nationally in quantum-related businesses, research groups, and patents, trailing only California.
- The study identifies greater coordination among researchers, manufacturers, and customers as a key opportunity to strengthen New York's competitive position in the quantum economy.
Context
The study was commissioned by Empire State Development's Division of Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) and prepared by The Quantum Insider. It highlights New York's position as a national leader in the emerging quantum industry and identifies opportunities to strengthen collaboration, accelerate commercialization, and support future economic growth.
Limitations
The evidence is limited to a single press release and a state-commissioned study. The study's findings are estimates of economic activity and job-years, not confirmed facts. The study's scope covers only New York State and does not include data on other states or international quantum capabilities.
