Briefings
The Linux kernel 7.4 development cycle concluded with a record-breaking merge window of 18,591 non-merge changesets, nearly matching the volume of the previous 7.3 cycle. This surge in AI-driven contributions during the merge phase suggests a shift toward more normal development patterns rather than a stabilization flood. The project has seen 2,678 developers contribute to 7.4, with 625 being first-time contributors.

Context
The Linux kernel 7.4 development cycle concluded with a record-breaking merge window of 18,591 non-merge changesets, nearly matching the volume of the previous 7.3 cycle. This surge in AI-driven contributions during the merge phase suggests a shift toward more normal development patterns rather than a stabilization flood.
Limitations
Evidence covers only the 7.4 development cycle merge window and initial contributor statistics. No data on post-merge stability, specific AI tool usage details, or long-term impact on production systems is provided.
