Briefings
Renzo Duin, an Amazon archaeologist, discovered pre-Columbian occupation sites in Suriname's mountainous region during a 2004 expedition with French botanists. He noted pottery fragments and a ditch-surrounded site, indicating long human habitation in the Amazon basin. Duin has since become a leading researcher in the region, though he notes that inland-upland histories remain poorly understood compared to coastal areas.
Key points
- Renzo Duin discovered pre-Columbian occupation sites in Suriname's mountainous region during a 2004 expedition with French botanists, noting pottery fragments and a ditch-surrounded site.
- Duin has since become a leading Amazon archaeologist, reshaping knowledge about human occupation in the rainforest through regular fieldwork in the Tumuc-Humac Mountains.
Context
This article reports on archaeological findings in Suriname's Amazon basin, highlighting that while coastal and riverine areas have improved knowledge of the past, inland-upland histories of Indigenous peoples remain underexplored. The discovery by Duin and colleagues challenges the perception of the region as pristine, revealing millennia of human occupation.
Limitations
Evidence is limited to a 2004 expedition and Duin's subsequent observations; no specific dates for earlier occupations are provided. The article does not specify the exact number of sites found or the total area surveyed. Uncertainty exists regarding the depth of prior archaeological research in the inland-uplands compared to coastal regions.
