Briefings
In September and October 2026, severe drought driven by El Niño caused massive wildfires across New Guinea and Indonesian Papua, releasing over 65 megatons of carbon by October 17. The VIIRS satellite captured smoke from October 11, 2026, while GFED data confirmed unprecedented emissions. Local fires were primarily unmanaged, contributing to deforestation in Indonesian Papua. Coverage is limited to October 2026 data and does not include long-term trends or future projections.
Key points
- September and October 2026 saw severe drought across New Guinea and Indonesian Papua, triggering massive wildfires that released over 65 megatons of carbon by October 17.
- The VIIRS satellite captured smoke from October 11, 2026, while GFED data confirmed unprecedented emissions exceeding 2015 totals and surpassing 1997 records.
Context
This event occurred during an El Niño event causing unusually dry weather, which primed ecosystems to burn. Fires were mostly unmanaged, leading to significant deforestation in Indonesian Papua. The event highlights the intersection of climate extremes and human land use in the region.
Limitations
Coverage is limited to October 2026 data and does not include long-term trends or future projections. Satellite imagery and emissions data may have gaps in remote areas or during smoke plumes.
