Briefings

The Pentagon announced a 10-year framework agreement with Lockheed Martin to supply at least 850 F-35 Lightning II aircraft, subject to Congressional approval. This deal aims to modernize and reinforce the US air force's fleet, with the company expected to produce 156 aircraft annually while funding at least $7 billion in investments. The agreement does not yet constitute a final order, as contract terms, prices, and delivery schedules will be negotiated after Congressional authorization. The F-35 is a fifth-generation stealth fighter with three variants for different branches, and the Pentagon has invested $8.7 billion in military projects. However, the program has faced delays and cost increases, with the GAO noting that Block 4 modernization costs exceeded initial estimates by at least five years and that all 110 F-35s delivered in 2024 arrived 238 days late on average.
