Briefings
WildMatch presents a novel approach to wildlife re-identification by adapting pretrained image matchers using only identity labels, avoiding costly correspondence annotations. The study mines informative image pairs to derive weak supervision, contrasting fine-tuning to strengthen same-identity correspondences while suppressing different-identity matches. Results show improved accuracy over off-the-shelf matchers and a state-of-the-art local-global fusion method on open-source datasets. The method learns a transferable correspondence prior rather than memorizing training identities, enabling data-efficient specialization for wildlife monitoring.
Key points
- WildMatch adapts pretrained image matchers using only identity labels without keypoint-level or geometric correspondence ground truth.
- The approach improves accuracy over off-the-shelf matchers and a state-of-the-art local-global fusion method on open-source wildlife re-identification datasets.
Context
Wildlife re-identification from camera-trap imagery is a central instance retrieval problem for non-invasive monitoring. Current methods either learn global embeddings requiring many labeled images or use off-the-shelf matchers. This study addresses the challenge of small, unlabeled wildlife datasets by leveraging identity annotations to adapt matchers without geometric correspondence data.
Limitations
The study relies on open-source datasets and an open-world protocol with held-out individuals. Results are limited to the specific open-source wildlife re-identification datasets tested. The method learns a transferable correspondence prior rather than memorizing training identities, which may not generalize to all wildlife domains without further validation.
