Briefings
South Korea launched its sixth national supercomputer, Hangang, in 2026, featuring 8,496 GPUs and 9,936 CPUs with 24x theoretical performance over its predecessor. The system uses direct liquid cooling and aims for top-10 global rankings by SC2026. A planned quantum integration in early 2027 is expected to create a hybrid computing system.
Key points
- Hangang launched in 2026 with 8,496 GPUs and 9,936 CPUs, delivering 24x theoretical performance over Nurion.
- The system uses direct liquid cooling with a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.15, aiming for top-10 global rankings by SC2026.
Context
South Korea's Hangang supercomputer, the sixth national system, launched in 2026 with 8,496 GPUs and 9,936 CPUs, delivering 24x theoretical performance over its predecessor. It uses direct liquid cooling with a PUE of 1.15 and aims for top-10 global rankings by SC2026. A planned quantum integration in early 2027 is expected to create a hybrid system.
Limitations
Coverage is limited to official reports from Seoul Economic Daily and KISTI. Specific quantum integration details remain unconfirmed, and the exact ranking position at SC2026 is expected rather than confirmed.
