Briefings

Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) extended the voting deadline for the presidential election by two hours nationwide due to a lack of public transport vehicles in several cities, including São Paulo and Salvador. The decision was made by Judge Cristiano Zanin after the campaign of President Lula da Silva requested the extension to ensure voters could reach polling stations. The TSE has suspended the release of total vote counts until the extension is fully implemented.

Key points

• The STF extended the voting deadline by two hours nationwide from 17:00 to 19:00 local time.
• The extension was requested by the campaign of President Lula da Silva following reports of reduced public transport vehicles in cities like São Paulo and Salvador.

Context

The Brazilian presidential election is scheduled for October 25, 2026, with voting hours originally set to end at 17:00 local time. The extension was necessary because the campaign reported that public transport fleets were insufficient in certain municipalities, preventing voters from reaching designated polling locations.

Limitations

The evidence is limited to a single article from October 25, 2026, which reports the STF's decision without providing details on the specific number of affected voters or the total number of polling stations impacted by the transport shortage.
